KDEB Gives Hundreds of Millions to Community

Selangor’s leading GLC, Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Berhad (KDEB) believes that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a form of corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model whose activities contribute towards building goodwill and trust in the KDEB brand. Policy would function as a built-in, self-regulating mechanism whereby business would be monitored and ensured adherence to law, ethical standards, and international norms. KDEB business would embrace responsibility for the impact of their activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public.

To date, more than RM450 million has been spent by KDEB to nurture and implement CSR programmes. Efforts are directed four (4) CSR key initiatives since year 2001:

  • First 20 Cubic Metres (20m3) Free Water To Consumers in Selangor
Since June 2008 until December 2009, KDEB has paid the monthly cost rebate for the first 20m3 free water of approximately RM11.0 million, which ((totalling a whopping RM200.143 million)) to the 1.16 million individual meters for the domestic consumers in Selangor. The initiative to give the first 20m3 free water is to reduce the financial burden of water consumers in Selangor.
  • Community and Nation-Building
Since 2001 until 2009, KDEB has contributed approximately RM6.0 million for ”Selangor State Caring Programmes”. KDEB also contributed to other community programmes, such as construction of IT Centres, providing spectacles to students and conducting English programmes in Selangor, which totaling RM1.0 million. This program is focused on providing assistance to the needy and under privileged as well as promoting community development in terms of constructing new housing projects.
  • Sports Development Sponsorship
KDEB has allocated RM7.75 million for sports development sponsorship in Selangor since 2008 until 2009. The focus of sports sponsorship is contributing towards developing sporting talent at grassroots level, especially in the preparation of Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) Selangor contingents. Being the main sponsor to Selangor Football Team (FAS) in 2009, KDEB has spent RM4.106 million and we believed this sponsorship has played a major role in helping the Selangor Football Team to become champions of the Charity Shield, FA Cup, Super League Cup as well as entering the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup in 2009. A healthy body generates a healthy community physically and mentally. Being active in sports activities is one way to acquire this. Sports help to develop harmonious community, provide a balance between recreation and work.
  • Reimbursement of Selangor Unit Trust or “Amanah Saham Selangor” (ASAS) to Unit Holders
In the year 2003, KDEB Group backed the reimbursement of Selangor Unit Trust or “Amanah Saham Selangor” (ASAS) shares to 82,000 unit holders priced at the initial cost of RM1.00 per unit, even though the market price of ASAS shares has dropped to RM0.30 per unit at that time. The total amount of reimbursement by KDEB Group was RM306 million. KDEB believed that these contributions are part of its CSR to aid the ASAS unit holders (majority are Selangorians) significantly affected by the stock market crash and global economic crisis, which hit the nation in the year 1998 to 2001
